Advice for New Teachers

Walking into your new classroom can be intimidating, especially if it’s your first time teaching. Here are some tips (directly from teachers) to keep in mind as you get adjusted in your classroom.

  1. Breathe.
  2. Don’t try to be “cool” but don’t be afraid to show your personality.
  3. Breathe some more.
  4. Be prepared to wing it. Lessons never go exactly as planned; a student always has a question you didn’t think of; and some lessons just bomb.
  5. If you make a mistake, fix it and move on. Don’t obsess over a mistake. It won’t ruin them or you.
  6. You’re not expected to be perfect, so don’t expect it of yourself. You’re learning too.
  7. Seriously, breathe.
  8. Get a drink afterward.

You’ve got this!
